Wow! It's amazing how the cold weather can really dampen your spirits to run, let alone cycle. But the past couple of days, it's been about what I can do lessen the impact. I'm not an indoor runner or cyclist by any means and I can't stand Plan Bs even though I do have them in my tool box for emergencies. However, I chose to run outside on Sunday morning and while I didn't completely freeze, I was fairly close to it! I had a blast though, running a total of 10 miles, warming up by mile 3, hitting my stride by mile 6 and capping it off with a 7 minute mile at mile 10. Next week I will be back up to 11 or 12 miles, plus the weather will be somewhat back to normal for this part of the Northwest! I can't wait for spring.
Speaking of spring...our first break into spring is going to be on March 12 and 13, 2011 the Cascade Bicycle Club is hosting the Seattle Bike Expo! It's family fun and it brings out the spring spirit in all of us!

I'm hopng to get back on the open roads towards the middle to end of March. Hitting the spin classes and hot yoga classes this month to loosen up the quick reaction muscles and work the slow endurance muscle fibers.
I can't wait and it would be great to start or join a club within the Olympia area this year. Also, the annual Group Health Seattle to Portland ride is 9 and 10 July 2011. Gotta gear up for a 200 mile ride!
Let's go...dust off the bike, loosen up the legs and let's ride!

What a great year this is going to be! There are so many activities to be had across western Washington, but remember to take it all in stride. Speaking of strides; below is a link for a great number of races and racing venues for all types of runners. Whether you are a sprinter, speedster or a long distance runaholic, then take a glance at not only the races, but just imagine how many more friends you can make along the way. Check it out!

Two upcoming racing venues
It's about that time of year when we really start to focus on training for certain races, venues and courses we want to check out and participate in. I encourage everyone who wants to join me to do just that and enjoy some good company and good eats afterwords. Here are a couple of races I will be doing and wouldn't mind if I did have some company on the trek to racing success (in my own mind).

Waiting for Spring
Okay, so it was a little chilly outside this morning when I went for a little run; therefore, it was easy for me to decide to switch to an alternate workout. Winter weather can wreak havoc on your routine or training schedule that's why it's important for us to make sure we have a quick fix or a Plan B.
Having a Plan B in your back pocket on days when you are not feeling the outside winter weather can be very beneficial. Not only are you able to survive the elements, but you can still get a great workout in. But mimicing an outside workout indoors can be a definite challenge as some of the cardio machines at your local gym don't exactly equate to road or track workouts, so it's important to choose wisely.
With me, I'm a cyclist and a runner and as long as the equipment I'm ready to use at my local gym isn't being used by anyone else, I'm in good shape. So I took to the treadmill, did a mile warmup and transitioned into a 3 mile tempo run alternating every 1/4 mile for the best affect. For the better part of the last 2.5 miles I averaged between 8.0 and 9.5 giving me a great half hour of running. I quickly cleaned the machine for the next person and immediately jumped on the stationary bike and peddled for the next half hour at level 9 for a composite total of 9 miles in 30 minutes. Average of about 3:20 a mile.
A solid workout with an indoor flavor. Can the benefits of continuous indoor activities be beneficial over long periods of time...no, but at least once or twice a week is okay. Check the weather reports for the upcoming weeks when planning your routines and enjoy your indoor or outdoor running routines.
If you happen to have suggestions or comments or even your own workout routines, by all means share them with the rest of us, because knowledge is power and the more power we have in our running or cycling database the more power we have in our internal chemistry to be better than when we first started our running lives.
Because...what we do in life, echoes an eternity!

A New Beginning
Hello Everyone!
Well, this will be the first of many posts to my blog which will cover a good majority of life's topics, as well as, life as an avid cyclist and runner. This is going to be a great opportunity for me to talk about training, ups and downs, races (marathons, half marathons, duathlons and cycling ventures across western Washington state and beyond.
I encourage feedback of all kinds, so please be sure to throw your two sense into the mix as well as links to maybe even your own blog/website or upcoming races, training events, and local group training circuits.
Lastly, I want to leave you with this thought; it's an old proverb from the Roman days, "What we do in life, echoes an eternity." Some of you may have even heard that verse in Gladiator with Russell Crowe, but the coinage has a much more different meaning in the Cyling Runners context. It's about what we as mere mortals can accomplish in the short existance we have on this planet. Take advantage of the time we have, enjoy life, socialize and most importantly, be more than you have ever expected to be.
Until my next post, cycle or run on! Post your blogs, leave me messages, email me.
